Sentosa, October 30: Ian Poulter celebrated taking the clubhouse lead in the US$5 million Barclays Singapore Open in typically touristy fashion with a visit to the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel.

Poulter used the social networking site Twitter to tell his fans that he had gone to Raffles last night.

The flamboyant Englishman set a poser for his 770,000 followers on Twitter by posting a picture of a half-full glass on the bar and asking: “Here is a picture of a drink at the Long Bar at Raffles, what is it called?”

Answers ranged from the correct, “Singapore Sling”, to the cheeky, “Forfit Your Man Card drink.”

Poulter is among a growing band of golfers keeping their supporters up to date with the activities on and off the course via Twitter.

The Ryder Cup star shot a five-under-par 65 at Sentosa Golf Club on Thursday and holds a one-stroke lead over South Africa’s Ernie Els and the unheralded Chan Yih-shin of Chinese Taipei.

Following a three-hour rain delay on Thursday afternoon, 78 players were due to complete their first rounds on Friday morning with the second round due to tee off at 9.55am.

There was a healthy attendance of 4,720 for Thursday’s first round.
